Chapter 18 -  The endeavor for Liberation - Slokas - 36, 37, 38, 39.


सुखं त्विदानीं त्रिविधं श‍ृणु मे भरतर्षभ ।
अभ्यासाद्रमते यत्र दुःखान्तं च निगच्छति ॥ १८-३६॥

यत्तदग्रे विषमिव परिणामेऽमृतोपमम् ।
तत्सुखं सात्त्विकं प्रोक्तमात्मबुद्धिप्रसादजम् ॥ १८-३७॥

विषयेन्द्रियसंयोगाद्यत्तदग्रेऽमृतोपमम् ।
परिणामे विषमिव तत्सुखं राजसं स्मृतम् ॥ १८-३८॥

यदग्रे चानुबन्धे च सुखं मोहनमात्मनः ।
निद्रालस्यप्रमादोत्थं तत्तामसमुदाहृतम् ॥ १८-३९॥

sukham tvidaaneem trividham shri’nu me bharatarshabha ।
abhyaasaadramate yatra duh’khaantam cha nigachchhati ॥ 18-36 ॥

yattadagre vishamiva parinaame’mri’topamam ।
tatsukham saattvikam proktamaatmabuddhiprasaadajam ॥ 18-37 ॥

vishayendriyasamyogaadyattadagre’mri’topamam ।
parinaame vishamiva tatsukham raajasam smri’tam ॥ 18-38 ॥

yadagre chaanubandhe cha sukham mohanamaatmanah’ ।
nidraalasyapramaadottham tattaamasamudaahri’tam ॥ 18-39 ॥

Now listen, hey, bull among the bharathas, the three kinds of comforts, if enjoyed through habits incur tragedy.

Whatever be the comfort that,  experienced as noxious at the begining and by the course of time experienced as wholesome, that is born out of perspicuity of Self-knowledge is said to be from the stainless constitution.

Whatever be the comfort that is experienced as wholesome at the begining through the senses from the objects and by the course of time becomes noxious, that comfort is termed to be from the passionate constitution.

Whatever be the comfort that is experienced at the begining through sleep, tardiness and intoxication which continues to deprive self-consciousness is considered to be from the ignorant constitution.

    Image courtesy:https://in.pinterest.com/pin/382665299562190623/ Chapter 18 -   The endeavor for Liberation - Slokas - 5, 6. यज्ञदानतपःकर्म न त्याज्यं कार्यमेव तत् । यज्ञो दानं तपश्चैव पावनानि मनीषिणाम् ॥ १८-५॥ एतान्यपि तु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा फलानि च । कर्तव्यानीति मे पार्थ निश्चितं मतमुत्तमम् ॥ १८-६॥ yajnyadaanatapah’karma na tyaajyam kaaryameva tat । yajnyo daanam tapashchaiva paavanaani maneeshinaam ॥ 18-5 ॥ etaanyapi tu karmaani sangam tyaktvaa phalaani cha । kartavyaaneeti me paartha nishchitam matamuttamam ॥ 18-6 ॥ The offerings, charity and austerities are purifiers for the wise ones therefore the actions pertaining to offering, charity, and austerities are for sure not to be given up.
